Superfatting is one of the most important concepts in natural soap making, and one of the least understood by soap buyers. It directly determines how a finished soap feels on skin, how moisturizing it is, and how long it lasts. Understanding superfatting gives buyers a meaningful lens for evaluating soap quality.
What Superfatting Is
Saponification requires a specific ratio of lye to fat. The saponification value of each fat — the amount of lye needed to completely convert that fat to soap — determines the formula. A fully saponified batch uses exactly the right amount of lye to convert all the fat to soap, leaving no unsaponified oil in the finished bar.
Superfatting means using less lye than would be needed to saponify all the fat in the formula. The difference — the superfat percentage — represents the portion of fat that remains unsaponified in the finished soap. A 5% superfat formula uses 5% less lye than full saponification would require, leaving 5% of the oils as free, unsaponified fat in the finished bar.
What Unsaponified Oil Does in Soap
The unsaponified oils in a superfatted soap remain in the bar as conditioning agents. When the soap is used, these free oils contact skin and deposit a thin layer of moisturizing fat that remains after rinsing. This is what creates the silky, conditioned feeling of a well-superfatted natural soap compared to a harshly cleansing soap with no superfat.
The specific oils used in the formula determine what the free oils do. A soap with a high proportion of shea butter in the formula will have shea butter's conditioning properties in the superfat fraction. A soap with castor oil will have castor oil's specific fatty acid profile in the free oil. Soap makers can choose their superfat oils to deliver specific skin benefits.
How Much Superfat Is Right
Standard natural soap is superfatted at 5 to 8%. This range provides meaningful conditioning benefit without compromising lather quality or bar longevity. Higher superfat means more conditioning but shorter bar life (more oil means the bar goes soft faster) and reduced lather quality (excess oil can suppress lather).
High-coconut-oil formulas often use higher superfats — up to 15 to 20% — to compensate for coconut oil's aggressive cleansing. Soap intended for dry skin conditions may use 8 to 10% superfat. Shampoo bars often use lower superfats (2 to 4%) because hair requires thorough cleansing without conditioning residue that weighs hair down.
Lye Safety and Superfatting
A common concern about natural soap is residual lye. Superfatting addresses this concern mathematically: by using less lye than full saponification would require, the formula ensures that all lye is consumed in the reaction with no excess remaining. A properly superfatted formula has zero free sodium hydroxide in the finished bar. The lye is entirely consumed; what remains is soap, glycerin, and unsaponified oil.
This is why legitimate natural soap makers cure their bars — the cure period allows any residual water to evaporate and confirms that saponification is complete. Properly formulated and cured natural soap is not caustic.
What This Means for Our Soap
Our bars are formulated with superfat percentages appropriate to each bar's purpose and base oil profile. The result is soap that cleans without stripping — the active cleansing removes what needs to be removed, while the conditioning superfat fraction ensures that what the skin needs stays behind. This balance is what differentiates a well-formulated natural soap from both commercial soap (no superfat, glycerin removed) and poorly formulated natural soap (inconsistent superfat, wrong oils for the formula's goals).
