The triathlete's skin care challenge is unique because it combines three sports with three distinct skin environments in a single race — and in training, those three environments repeat across the week in different combinations. Swimming in chlorinated water, cycling in aerodynamic position under sun exposure, running in compression gear with accumulated sweat and salt from two prior disciplines. Each transition creates a new skin environment that the previous one didn't prepare for.
Swim to Bike: The First Transition
Exiting the swim and mounting the bike, skin is saturated with pool chlorine or open water minerals. Chlorine-saturated skin contacts the bike saddle immediately, and the sweat of cycling begins accumulating on top of water-logged, compromised skin. This combination — chlorine-damaged barrier, wet skin, saddle friction — is the highest-risk window for saddle sore development in triathlon.
Pre-race preparation matters more than mid-race treatment. Applying chamois cream before the race in transition, ensuring it covers the full saddle contact area, creates a protective barrier for the bike leg regardless of what the swim did to skin beforehand.
Bike to Run: The Second Transition
Coming off the bike into the run, skin is sun-exposed, sweaty, and has been under saddle friction for hours in a long-course triathlon. The inner thigh and groin chafe risk from the bike is now combined with the running gait's own friction patterns. Areas that weren't chafing on the bike may begin chafing on the run as different muscle groups engage and different fabric contact patterns develop.
Nothing can be done about this mid-race except continuing with whatever chafe prevention was applied before the start. The lesson is that pre-race balm application needs to cover both bike-specific and run-specific friction zones simultaneously, because there is no reapplication opportunity between disciplines.
Post-Race Skin Care
After a full triathlon, skin has been exposed to pool chemicals or open water, hours of UV radiation, saddle friction, run friction, and accumulated sweat and salt from hours of exertion. The post-race shower is among the most important showers of the training year.
Shower within 30 to 60 minutes of finishing. Use warm water, not hot.
