Trail Running, Sauna, and Skin: The Two-Shower Protocol for Outdoor Athletes

Trail runners and hikers who use sauna as part of their recovery routine have specific considerations that road runners and gym athletes don't. The combination of extended outdoor exposure — UV, wind, trail dust, plant contact, stream crossings — with heavy training loads and then sauna creates a unique skin care situation that deserves its own protocol.

What Trail Running and Hiking Add to the Skin Challenge

The Trail-to-Sauna Shower Sequence

For trail athletes who sauna after long efforts:

First shower: post-trail, pre-sauna. Remove sunscreen, repellent, trail dust, and plant material before entering the sauna. A thorough pre-sauna shower removes the surface contamination that would otherwise be driven deeper by sauna heat.
