The Ultimate Pre-Race Skin Care Routine for 50K and 100-Mile Runners

Two weeks before a 100-miler, most runners are tapering their mileage and loading their drop bags. Almost none of them are thinking about their skin protocol. That's a mistake.

Skin preparation for an ultra isn't something you do the night before. It's a two-week process that determines whether your skin holds up or falls apart in the second half of the race.

Two Weeks Out

Audit your current products. Everything you'll use on race day — soap, sunscreen, balm, anti-chafe — should already be products you've tested. Two weeks out is your last chance to swap anything and test it on a long training run.

Switch to natural soap if you haven't. Conventional soaps with SLS strip your moisture barrier with every wash. Two weeks of natural soap gives your skin time to reestablish healthy oil production and repair any existing barrier damage. Try our Pine Tar Rugged Bar — anti-inflammatory and non-stripping, designed for exactly this kind of sustained outdoor use.

Identify all chafe zones from training. Every runner has a unique chafe map. Review your long run notes. Where did hot spots develop? Make a list. These are the zones you'll protect on race day.

One Week Out

Moisturize after every shower. Dry, tight skin is more prone to cracking and chafing than well-moisturized skin. Test your race-day sunscreen on a long run. Sunscreen that works fine for a 10-miler may irritate or wash off during a 24-hour effort.

Two Days Out

Trim toenails short and straight. Do it two days out, not the night before — freshly trimmed nails can be sharp. Pre-treat any existing skin issues with healing balm so they have 48 hours to recover before race start.

Night Before

Shower with a gentle natural bar. Apply balm to all known friction zones. Let it absorb overnight. Lay out your race-morning skin kit so nothing is forgotten at 4am.

Race Morning

Work through your friction zones methodically. Sunscreen 20 minutes before leaving for the start line. Pre-run shower with our Eucalyptus and Peppermint Wake-Up Bar — the menthol activation and airway opening are genuine physiological tools for pre-race preparation.

Your skin is ready. Now run.

Beyond Clean, Beyond Ordinary.
