The Sun and Skin: Vitamin D, UV Damage, Natural Protection, and Why Your Post-Sun Soap Matters

The sun is the original source of life on earth. Every plant, every animal, every human being exists in relationship with solar radiation. Vitamin D3 produced through sun exposure behaves differently than supplemental vitamin D in some respects — it is produced gradually with exposure and cannot be overproduced through skin synthesis because prolonged UV exposure converts excess pre-vitamin D3 to inactive compounds, providing a built-in regulation mechanism that oral supplementation lacks.

Vitamin D has documented roles in immune function, bone health, cardiovascular health, mental health (its deficiency is strongly associated with depression), and skin health specifically — vitamin D receptors in skin cells participate in cell differentiation, immune regulation, and barrier function.

Nitric oxide release. UVA radiation from the sun triggers release of nitric oxide from skin nitric oxide stores. Research has found that people who live at higher latitudes with less sun exposure have higher rates of cardiovascular disease independent of vitamin D levels, suggesting that nitric oxide release from skin sun exposure contributes meaningfully to cardiovascular health beyond vitamin D.

Mood and circadian rhythm regulation. Sunlight exposure to the eyes and skin in the morning regulates circadian rhythm through melatonin suppression and serotonin production. The mood-lifting effects of sun exposure are well-documented and contribute to the depression and mood disruption that characterizes sun-deprived winters at high latitudes.

Skin microbiome effects. Emerging research suggests that UV exposure has complex effects on the skin microbiome — some pathogenic bacteria are directly killed by UV, while the skin microbiome composition shifts in ways that may be beneficial for some individuals. This area of research is developing rapidly.

What the Sun Does to Skin: The Damage

Immediate UV effects. UV radiation is energetic enough to damage DNA directly. UVB radiation produces cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) in skin cell DNA — a characteristic UV-induced DNA damage pattern. The body's repair enzymes can fix these lesions if they occur at rates compatible with repair capacity. When UV exposure exceeds repair capacity, unrepaired DNA damage accumulates and contributes to photocarcinogenesis (UV-induced skin cancer).

UVA radiation, which penetrates deeper into skin than UVB, generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage DNA indirectly through oxidative mechanisms and also break down dermal collagen fibers directly. UVA is primarily responsible for the collagen degradation that produces visible photoaging — wrinkles, texture changes, and loss of elasticity.

Chronic photoaging. The accumulated effects of years of UV exposure produce photoaging — the skin aging that is caused by sun rather than by intrinsic biological aging. Photoaged skin shows reduced collagen density, fragmented elastin, dilated superficial blood vessels, and surface texture changes that are distinct from intrinsic aging and largely preventable with appropriate sun protection.

Sunburn as acute inflammation. Sunburn is an acute inflammatory response to DNA-damaged skin cells signaling for immune response. The redness, heat, and pain of sunburn reflect genuine tissue damage and inflammation, not simply a skin reaction. The Balance: How Much Sun Is Right
