Swimming in chlorinated pools is one of the most damaging regular activities for skin health. The same chemical that makes pool water safe to swim in — chlorine — is a known skin and hair irritant that strips the skin's natural oil barrier, disrupts the skin microbiome, and causes the dryness and irritation that competitive swimmers and regular lap swimmers frequently describe as just part of the sport.
It doesn't have to be. Here's what chlorine actually does and how to manage it.
What Pool Chlorine Does to Skin
Lipid stripping. Chlorine reacts with the fatty acids and lipids in the skin's protective barrier, disrupting the lipid matrix that prevents water loss and keeps irritants out. After a pool session, the skin's barrier is measurably compromised. For swimmers who train daily or multiple times per week, this is a cumulative daily disruption that compounds over a season.
Protein disruption. Chlorine reacts with the keratin proteins in skin and hair, altering their structure. This produces the characteristic rough, dry skin texture and brittle hair that competitive swimmers develop over a season of heavy pool training.
Microbiome disruption. Chlorine kills bacteria indiscriminately, including the beneficial commensal bacteria that maintain skin health and barrier function. Regular pool swimming produces measurable shifts in skin microbiome composition that are associated with increased skin sensitivity and inflammatory conditions.
Trichloramine formation. When chlorine reacts with sweat, urine, and other nitrogen-containing compounds in pool water, it forms chloramines — including trichloramine, a volatile compound that becomes airborne above the pool surface. Indoor pools with inadequate ventilation accumulate trichloramine, which causes the eye, respiratory, and skin irritation that people associate with heavily chlorinated pools. The issue isn't always too much chlorine — it's often inadequate management of chlorine byproducts.
The Pre-Swim Shower
Most public pools require showering before swimming, and this is not just hygiene theater. Showering before swimming removes sweat, sunscreen, and personal care product residue from your skin before it enters the pool water. Less organic matter in the water means less chloramine formation and a better environment for everyone.
A brief warm rinse is sufficient for the pre-swim shower. Your skin actually absorbs water during showering, and well-hydrated skin absorbs less pool water and chlorine during swimming than dry skin does.
The Post-Swim Shower
This is the critical shower for skin health. Shower immediately after leaving the pool — before chlorine residue on skin dries and continues reacting with skin proteins and lipids.
Use warm water, not hot. Hot water on chlorine-compromised skin increases irritation and strips more of the already-depleted lipid barrier.
