Skiing and Snowboarding Skin Care: Altitude UV, Wind Exposure, and Après-Ski Recovery

Skiing and snowboarding create skin demands that combine extreme cold, high-altitude UV exposure, and the friction of boots and gear across a full day on the mountain. Winter sports athletes often underestimate sun protection needs because of the cold temperature, even though snow reflects up to 80% of UV radiation back toward exposed skin — nearly doubling effective exposure compared to flat ground.

The Altitude and Snow UV Combination

UV intensity increases approximately 10 to 12% per 1,000 meters of elevation gain. Combined with snow's reflective properties, skiers and riders at altitude face some of the highest UV exposure scenarios in any sport — yet because the air is cold, sunburn risk feels counterintuitive and protection is often inadequate.

The areas most commonly missed: under the chin and nose (from upward-reflected snow glare), ears, and any skin exposed between goggles and helmet or face mask. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin before heading out, including under the chin where reflected light causes burns that surprise most skiers.

Cold and Wind Exposure

A full day skiing exposes skin to sustained cold and wind that accelerates moisture loss dramatically. This is the same wind-chapping mechanism discussed in winter skin care generally, but skiing concentrates the exposure into a single, intense, all-day session rather than the shorter outdoor periods of typical winter activity.

Apply a protective barrier — a thin layer of natural oil or balm — to exposed facial skin before heading to the mountain. This reduces the windburn that produces the characteristic red, tight, chapped skin of a hard ski day.

Ski and snowboard boots create friction points at the shin, heel, and ankle across a day of riding. Glove contact creates friction on hands, particularly for snowboarders who use their hands for balance and pushing off more than skiers do.
