You crossed the finish line. You cried (no judgment), ate a burger, put on dry socks, and called your family. Now what? Your skin spent anywhere from 12 to 40 hours under extraordinary stress. The next 72 hours determine how quickly it recovers.
Hour 0–2: Immediate Post-Finish
Resist the urge to immediately shower. Let your body temperature normalize first. Drink fluids, get off your feet, elevate legs if possible. Apply balm to any open wounds, raw skin, or broken blisters before showering to create a barrier while you wait.
Hour 2–4: The First Shower
Use lukewarm water, not hot. Your skin's inflammatory response is still active — hot water amplifies it. A gentle natural soap bar is appropriate here. Avoid anything with strong fragrance or exfoliating agents. This shower is about removing sweat, salt, and trail debris — not deep cleaning.
After showering: blot dry (don't rub), apply healing balm to all raw zones, and wear the loosest, most comfortable clothing you own. Our Pine Tar Rugged Bar is the appropriate bar here — anti-inflammatory, non-stripping, built for exactly this kind of recovery use.
Hours 4–24: Rest and Barrier Restoration
Sleep if you can. During sleep, skin repair accelerates — growth hormone release during deep sleep directly promotes skin cell regeneration. Keep damaged zones clean and covered loosely. Hydration matters: water and electrolyte replacement in the first 24 hours directly supports skin repair.
Hours 24–48: Assessment and Active Recovery
Signs of infection to watch for: increasing redness spreading from a wound, warmth, swelling, pus, or a wound that is getting more painful rather than less. Any of these warrants medical attention. Continue gentle washing with natural soap and apply balm on damaged areas.
Hours 48–72: Rebuilding
By day three, most ultra runners are ready for their normal routine to resume. Return to your regular natural soap. Add our Coffee and Brown Sugar Scrub Bar two to three times per week once skin has recovered sufficiently — exfoliation helps clear the dead cells that accumulate after extended physical stress.
Most skin damage from an ultra resolves within 7 to 10 days with proper care.
