Glycerin — also spelled glycerine — is the ingredient that makes natural bar soap feel different from commercial soap on your skin. Understanding what glycerin is, what it does, and why commercial manufacturers remove it from their products clarifies one of the most important distinctions between natural and commercial soap.
What Glycerin Is
Glycerin (chemically, glycerol) is a simple polyol — a three-carbon molecule with three hydroxyl groups. It is a natural byproduct of saponification: when fats react with lye to produce soap, glycerin is released from the triglyceride structure of the fat as a separate molecule. In every batch of naturally made soap, approximately 10 to 15% of the product is glycerin.
What Glycerin Does for Skin
Glycerin is a humectant — a substance that draws moisture from the environment and holds it at the skin surface. When glycerin is present in soap, each wash deposits a thin layer of glycerin on skin that continues to draw moisture after rinsing. This is why skin washed with glycerin-rich natural soap feels moisturized rather than tight after washing.
The moisturizing effect of glycerin is significant and clinically documented. Studies have shown that glycerin is one of the most effective topical moisturizing agents available, comparable to many synthetic moisturizers but without the occlusive or sensitizing properties of some synthetic alternatives.
Glycerin also supports skin barrier function. It participates in the formation and maintenance of the lamellar lipid structure of the stratum corneum — the organized lipid bilayers that form the skin's waterproofing barrier. Adequate glycerin at the skin surface supports barrier integrity in ways that purely cleaning products don't.
Why Commercial Manufacturers Remove It
Glycerin is considerably more valuable as a standalone ingredient than it is left in soap. It's used in:
- Moisturizers and lotions (as a primary humectant)
- Pharmaceutical preparations (as a solvent and humectant)
- Food products (as a sweetener and preservative)
- Industrial applications (in nitroglycerin, antifreeze, and many other products)
Commercial soap manufacturers extract the glycerin from their soap base during processing and sell it separately for these higher-value applications. What's left is a stripped soap base that cleans effectively but provides none of glycerin's moisturizing benefit.
This is why you need body lotion after using commercial soap. The glycerin that should have been retained in the soap was extracted and is now being sold back to you in a separate product.
Glycerin in Our Soap
Every bar in the Mean Extreme lineup retains its naturally produced glycerin. We don't remove it. The glycerin that results from saponifying our base oils stays in the finished bar, where it moisturizes skin with every wash.
This is not a marketing decision — it's the natural result of making soap properly without the industrial extraction step that commercial manufacturers add for profit. Natural soap makers keep the glycerin because it makes the soap better. Commercial manufacturers extract it because it makes more money.
The difference shows in how your skin feels after washing. If your skin is tight and dry after showering with commercial soap, that tightness is the absence of glycerin. Switch to a natural bar and give it two weeks. The difference will be apparent.
