Football and rugby pads, helmets, and compression gear present some of the most demanding hygiene challenges in athletics — heavy padding that traps heat against skin for hours, helmet interiors that can't be easily machine washed, and full-contact sweat accumulation across practices and games throughout a season.
Shoulder Pads and Body Padding
The foam padding inside shoulder pads and other body armor absorbs sweat across every practice and game, and unlike fabric gear, can't simply be thrown in a washing machine. Wipe down padding interiors with a natural antimicrobial solution after every use, and allow full air drying — ideally overnight — before the next use.
Removable, washable padding liners, available for many modern equipment systems, should be laundered with natural, fragrance-free detergent on a regular schedule throughout a season rather than only when odor becomes noticeable.
Helmet Interior Care
As discussed in our field sports skin care content, helmet padding contact with the forehead and scalp across a season contributes directly to acne and folliculitis in these areas. Most helmet padding is removable for cleaning — remove and hand wash with natural soap on a weekly basis during active season play, allowing full drying before reinstalling.
A diluted tea tree oil spray applied to helmet interior padding between full washes provides additional antimicrobial support for the sustained skin contact that helmets involve across hours of practice and games.
Compression and Base Layer Care
The compression layers worn under pads, discussed in our field sports skin care article, contact skin directly for the full duration of practice and games. Natural, fragrance-free detergent for these garments reduces the synthetic chemical exposure during hours of direct, sweat-heavy skin contact that base layers involve.
Turf Contact and Equipment
Artificial turf's infill material, discussed in our field sports content as a source of turf burn contamination, also transfers to equipment during play — pads, gloves, and cleats all pick up turf residue that benefits from cleaning attention beyond just skin care.
Post-Practice Skin Priority
Given the extensive padding and equipment contact football and rugby involve, the post-practice shower needs to address more total skin surface area under sustained contact than most other sports. Our Activated Charcoal Black Bar Soap for the general full-body deep clean, with our Tea Tree Antibacterial Bar specifically on hairline, neck, shoulders, and any turf burns or abrasions from contact.
