Cold weather training presents skin challenges that differ substantially from the heat-related concerns discussed throughout our warm weather content. The mechanisms are different, the affected areas are different, and the appropriate protocols are different.
Why Cold Air Damages Skin
Cold air holds significantly less moisture than warm air. When athletes train outdoors in winter, they expose skin to air with very low absolute humidity, which draws moisture from skin through increased trans-epidermal water loss. Wind compounds this substantially, stripping the thin layer of warmer, more humid air that normally sits against skin.
Indoor heating creates the second half of the problem. Forced air heating can reduce indoor humidity below 20 percent, meaning athletes move between two moisture-stripping environments without meaningful recovery time in between.
The Vasoconstriction Factor
Cold exposure produces peripheral vasoconstriction as the body prioritizes core temperature maintenance. Reduced blood flow to skin means reduced oxygen and nutrient delivery, slowing the repair processes discussed throughout our recovery content. This is why minor cuts and abrasions often heal more slowly during winter training blocks than the same injuries would in warmer months.
Areas Most Affected
Exposed skin takes the most damage: face, ears, and hands for most winter athletes. Lips are particularly vulnerable given their thin skin and lack of oil glands. The hands deserve specific attention for athletes handling equipment, poles, or bars in cold conditions, where the combination of cold, wind, and friction produces cracking that can become genuinely painful and slow to resolve.
The Hot Shower Trap
The instinct after cold training is a very hot shower, which feels excellent but actively worsens the moisture loss cold air already caused. Hot water strips skin barrier lipids more aggressively than warm water, compounding rather than relieving the winter dryness problem. Warm rather than hot water, with a shorter duration, better serves skin during cold weather training blocks.
Post-Training Protocol for Cold Weather

Moisturize within three minutes of showering while skin is still slightly damp, which meaningfully improves moisture retention compared to applying product to fully dried skin.
Pre-Training Protection
Unlike warm weather training where the emphasis is on managing sweat and friction, cold weather training benefits from a protective barrier applied before exposure. A natural oil or balm on exposed face and lip areas reduces the moisture loss that wind and cold air produce during the session itself.
Layering and the Sweat Paradox
Athletes often sweat substantially during winter training despite the cold, then face rapid cooling as that sweat evaporates. This creates a specific chafing risk in covered areas alongside the dryness risk in exposed areas, meaning winter skin care often needs to address both problems simultaneously in different body regions.
