Cedarwood and sandalwood are among the most ancient aromatic materials in human history. It is among the most expensive essential oils in the world due to the 30 to 60 years required for Santalum album trees to mature to oil-producing quality.

The primary active compounds are alpha and beta santalol, accounting for 75 to 90% of true Indian sandalwood oil. These compounds have well-documented antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and fragrance properties. Research has found santalol effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in laboratory studies, consistent with sandalwood's traditional use in South and Southeast Asian medicine for respiratory conditions.

For skin specifically, santalol has documented antibacterial activity against skin pathogens, anti-inflammatory effects through inhibition of inflammatory enzyme systems, and the psychological calming and grounding effects from its aromatic profile that make sandalwood one of the most sought fragrance materials in luxury perfumery.

The Combination

Cedarwood and sandalwood share a complementary aromatic profile — both are warm, woody, and lasting, but where cedarwood has a sharper, more resinous character, sandalwood brings creamier warmth and greater complexity. Together they produce the kind of masculine aromatic depth that synthetic fragrance can approximate but never fully replicate, because the hundreds of compounds in natural essential oils interact in ways that no synthetic composition achieves.
